The Boat Project

The Boat Project is the most ambitious undertaking to date for UK-based company Lone Twin: Gary Winters and Gregg Whelan. After a year of painstaking artistry and craftsmanship, a 30-ft sailing boat fashioned from hundreds of donated wooden objects was named Collective Spirit and launched on Monday 7 May 2012.

Between february and august 2011,
Lone Twin invited individuals to contribute to the construction of the massive work, by asking the community to bring in special wooden tokens - ranging in scale and size - which had a story to tell. The result is a 30 ft long yacht which could be considered more a piece of art.

The Boat Project is one of 12 artists taking the lead commissions to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and has been produced in collaboration with olympic silver medallist mark covell and international boat designer simon rogers.

The boat and her crew of local people will now continue on the maiden voyage along and beyond the South East Coast, stopping off at locations where a festival of events - including newly commissioned artworks, music, dance and artist talks – will celebrate the boat's arrival and mooring.

Short interim stop offs and sightings along the entire route will be scheduled, allowing as many people as possible to experience the journey as it takes place.
